The Review

“Hec Regnum Meum Est” is the second full length album of Nocturnal Amentia that it is released in 2012. The band comes from Ukraine, it consists of four members and it exists since 2002 while it has released two demos, two split and three full length albums. By the simple but beautiful cover and the artwork of the album, even someone who hasn’t listened to any of the band’s preview releases, can understand what he is going to listen. So, in this album there are eight tracks of profane, violent Black Metal with many Thrash elements of about forty minutes of duration.

The rhythmic Thrashy riffs follow the brutal, warlike. In other tracks the high pitched riffs are involved with ugly disharmonic melodies, reducing the speed with slow, dark passages in order to continue after a while the destructive riffs. The tracks’ structure is simple and straightforward, something that in combination with the big duration of some tracks it can make some parts quite tedious. I think that they have a lot of interesting riffs, especially the thrashy ones, while the brutal riffs are not so inspired and some of them are quite boring. The guitars are distorted, other times dirty other times clean, played with accuracy and great energy. The bass can’t be heard clearly but it gives depth to the sound while the very good drums with variety in their style of playing and interesting lines they add power and make the compositions more brutal.

The vocals are harsh Black Metal vocals which are not very expressive and they are quite monotonous, they don’t have to offer anything special. The production is bassy and clean. Combined with the awesome mix the sound that is put out is very powerful and massive. The lyrics are written in Russian but their English translations are contained in the cd. They are antichristian, profane, full of hate for the human race and Satanic.

Generally, it appears that the band has worked much and has worked with professionalism. The album has both its good and its bad moments, leaving a good impression to the listener after the listen. For sure, you won’t listen to anything original or anything so much inspired in “Hec Regnum Meum Est” but I don’t believe that the whole attempt will be indifferent for you. Listen to it.
